Q: What is Japanese Style Hair Straightening

A: Shiseido Crystallizing/Liscio Hair Straightening is an innovative new technique from Japan to make frizzy, curly or wavy hair straight while preserving the hair’s health. In the past, people were concerned that if they straightened their hair, they would damage it significantly, and this was true. It is not true any more. Hair can be straightened much more effectively with the Japanese techniques with much less damage to the hair.

Japanese Hair Straightening typically will improve the hair’s feel, softness and shine while making it more manageable!

The Straightening is performed as follows:

Assessing the hair type and condition.
Washing the hair.
Applying protein to the hair, if necessary for the particular customer and hair type. (small extra charge for this procedure, if you don’t do this when necessary, you could end up with a less than satisfactory result, the stylist will tell you if this is necessary or not in your consultation)
Applying Solution #1 (this cuts the hair’s “Cystine Bonds” - the bonds that hold curl or wave patterns).
Testing to see when the hair is ready to have Solution #1 rinsed out.
Rinsing the hair.
Eliminating some excess moisture in the hair (blow-drying to a certain point).
Ironing the hair in extremely small sections with a special Japanese Straightening Iron that reaches temperatures of 180 degrees Celsius. Don’t worry, this will not damage your hair unnecessarily.
Applying Solution #2 to the hair after ironing is completed.
Rinsing the hair and conditioning.
Drying the hair and applying a flat iron to remove excess moisture if necessary.

Wow, the 20/20 Thermal Reconditioning (TR) article recently done on TV with Barbara Walters at ABC News, the amount of traffic and questions to Aoi Beauty Studio in Vancouver BC Canada has grown like crazy in the past few days. It seems the 20/20 Hair Straightening TV article has generated a lot more interest than fear.

Funny how 20/20 made it sound like TR or Japanese Hair Straightening is something you may not want to do, yet all our traffic is from people who want to know how to get it done right!

It is true. As the 20/20 Hair Straightening article said, TR is PERMANENT, the only way to make it go away is to let your hair grow out of it. For someone with long Hair that could be years before all your hair is curly again. For someone who wants Straight hair permanently this is a benefit!

It is NOT TRUE just as the 20/20 Thermal Reconditioning article said that Thermal Reconditioning or Japanese Hair Straightening makes your hair Healthier. It is true that it makes it LOOK healthier though!

It is TRUE as the 20/20 Japanese Hair Straightening article said that if the technician doing the Hair Straightening for you is not skilled, you can end up with your hair breaking off in clumps. BE CAREFUL who you trust your hair too.

ABC News 20/20 with Barbara Walters on Thermal Reconditioning (Japanese Hair Straightening)

Wow, did Barbara Walters ever hit the nail on the head about Thermal Reconditioning or Japanese Hair Straightening on ABC News’ 20/20 last night.

BE CAREFUL, done wrong, it can leave you with broken damaged beyond repair hair.

The funny part was as the 20/20 with Barbara Walters report pointed out a lot of negatives to the procedure, if you really want straight hair, those negatives would be positives.

They spent a bit of time telling you how permanent the process is. Done correctly, the process is abosulutely permanent, so don’t think you can decide to go back to curly by way of a perm. A great thing, if you want straight hair permanently. The hair is basically straight until it grows out, then the new growth will be the way it was. If you want to keep it straight, you will need to come back for a touch up of the roots in 3 to 6 months depending on how fast your hair grows and how curly it was before you straightened it.

The damage question. No Japanese Straightened Hair or Thermal reconditioned hair is not healthy. However it does look healthy. So do you want healthly looking Not technically healthy hair that is straight, or curly really healthy hair that doesn’t look healthy. I personally thought that whole argument was a bit funny.

There is a lot you can do to limit the damage to your hair. The biggest is to be cautious about what process you are having done. Shiseido Crystallize is a great process as it can actually allow coloring to a limited extent after straightening, and is one of the more efficient and less damaging processes on the market.

The other great product for minimal damaging Japanese Hair Straightening or Thermal reconditioning is Liscio by Milbon. Minimal damage and a slightly shinier finish than Shiseido’s Crystallize but not able to be colored afterwards as it seals the hair to well.

The biggest thing that was correct about Barbara Walters of ABC News 20/20 was the fact that you really do need to be careful who you choose to have your hair straightened by. If the technician is not experienced, they can melt your hair, and it can break off in clumps just like 20/20 said. That is no JOKE!

Beware of cheap places as they may be cutting corners. Japanese staff can be a sign that they have the correct training, but not completely neccessary to ensure a good quality job.

Once your hair has been straightened, you will no longer struggle with the blow dryer every morning to make your hair look great. 10 minutes and you will be good to go. Rain, Shine, swimming pool, whatever. Your hair will be straight just like Avril Lavigne and Jennifer Anniston. Hey what lady wouldn’t want Brad Pitt to be attracted to you!

Straight Hair, if you want it, you can have it, do your due diligence and have a consultation (usually free) to make sure you are comfortable the person doing it has the necessary experience to not MELT YOUR HAIR!
